Hotel-Pionier Johannes Badrutt

Invented winter tourism with a legendary bet

According to tradition, Johannes Badrutt was sitting in front of the fireplace with four English holiday guests in his Kulm Hotel in St. Moritz in the autumn of 1864. Badrutt raved to them about the winter in St. Moritz: brilliant sunshine, a snow-covered landscape like something out of a picture book and mild temperatures during the day. "A paradise on earth." The English didn't believe a word he said. They knew England's dull, wet and cold winter too well. So it came to the legendary bet: the English should come back in December, Badrutt suggested. And if they didn't enjoy their stay, he would reimburse their travel expenses. No sooner said than done. The English did indeed come - and stayed until Easter. Badrutt won his legendary bet and winter tourism was launched.

Switzerland's first electric light

Badrutt always had an innovation ready for his guests. In 1879, Switzerland's first electric light illuminated the Grand Restaurant at the Kulm Hotel in St. Moritz. Badrutt first became acquainted with it at the World's Fair in Paris. Returning rich in impressions, he had a small power station built. At the time, the entire installation with power station cost around 11,000 Swiss francs - a considerable sum for that time. The bold undertaking succeeded and Badrutts' innovative spirit was rewarded. He was also considered a pioneer of cultural entertainment in St. Moritz. Aristocrats and personalities from business, politics and culture, who travelled from all over Europe, enjoyed themselves with sporting activities, masked balls and the secrets of magic lanterns.

Snow Polo World Cup St' Moritz

Top of the World

St. Moritz is the birthplace of winter tourism (1864) and winter sports (1884). The town has twice hosted the Winter Olympics (1928 and 1948), and over the years it has hosted numerous skiing and bobsleigh world championships. Horse races have been held on the frozen Lake St. Moritz since 1907 and the world's first polo tournament on snow was held here in 1985.

Sankt Moritz could perhaps never have been so successful without its unique location in the magnificent Upper Engadine. At 1856 m above sea level, the climate is dry and pleasant all year round - the sunshine on 322 out of 365 days makes even the harsh winter cold bearable. Spa guests have been flocking to St. Moritz since the Bronze Age: the mineral springs in St. Moritz Bad were discovered around 3400 years ago and even then attracted visitors from far and wide to the barren mountain valley with its pleasant climate.

Kulm Hotel St. Moritz

St. Moritz has always been a place where new developments began. The success story of winter tourism began here 150 years ago, Switzerland's first electric light bulb shone here, Europe's first "Palace Hotel" stood here, snow polo and bobsleigh were invented here, numerous sports were played here before they were played anywhere else on the continent. In 2017, St. Moritz will host the Alpine World Ski Championships for the fifth time.
